A Deformed View of Women

Women are often seen as commodities for male consumption. Pornography, often filmed from the perspective of the male gaze, emphasizes male power while stripping women of their personhood and reducing them to objects of pleasure. In a recent survey of sixteen- to eighteen-year-old Americans, “many of the young women said they were pressured to play out the ‘scripts’ their male partners had learned from porn. They felt badgered into having sex in uncomfortable positions, faking sexual responses, and consenting to unpleasant or painful acts.”8

The American Psychological Association noted that “the saturation of sexualized images of females is leading to body hatred, eating disorders, low self-esteem, depression.”9 Put all that into the stories of Christian men, and it complicates the church’s ability to disciple men and build healthy and safe environments for women.
